EXTREME AMBITION...OR UNDIAGNOSED ADDICTION IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN?

Two Recovering Adrenaline Addicts Identify the Symptoms and Share Their Path to Recovery
Los Angeles, CA - Do you constantly over-commit yourself? Wait until the last minute to complete projects? And no matter how much you accomplish, do you still feel you need to do more? If so, you may be suffering from "adrenaline addiction."
In their new book, Confessions of an Adrenaline Addict, life coaches and professional speakers Adoley Odunton and Deborah Deras alert us to the dangers of adrenaline addiction, an addiction to the adrenaline rush that comes from being constantly active and busy. Two recovering adrenaline addicts themselves, Odunton and Deras draw upon their own experiences to define this under-diagnosed addiction and present seven principles for recovery.
According to blackwomenshealth.org, "At least 60 percent of African American women rated the following events as stressful in the past year: future security, time pressures, household responsibilities, work, health concerns, and financial pressures." Studies continue to state that African American women face other psychological issues associated with hectic lifestyle demands.
Adrenaline addicts are typically seen as overachievers who accomplish more than most. Because such behavior is rewarded in our society, adrenaline addicts are often viewed as heroes by their peers. However, constant activity with no down time burns out the adrenal glands, taking a great toll on one's emotional, physical and spiritual health over time. In other words, adrenaline addiction is a serious issue with potentially massive repercussions.
Women are at a higher risk due to the many roles they have and the pressure to work harder to receive the same recognition and compensation as men. Minority women, like Odunton and Deras, often feel this pressure even more harshly.
Confessions of an Adrenaline Addict reminds us of the importance of balance and shows us how to attain it. It also emphasizes the need to work synergistically with others to maximize health and personal productivity with more ease, grace and joy.
Odunton and Deras are the founders of Synergy Unlimited, a professional development company that offers a holistic approach to time management, productivity and life balance.
